"I am both Muslim and Christian" - Rev. Ann Holmes Redding | a beacon of hope in our troubled time

Rev. Ann Holmes ReddingSelection from The Seattle Times, Article by Janet I. Tu

Shortly after noon on Fridays, the Rev. Ann Holmes Redding ties on a black headscarf, preparing to pray with her Muslim group on First Hill. On Sunday mornings, Redding puts on the white collar of an Episcopal priest.

She does both, she says, because she's Christian and Muslim.

Redding, who until recently was director of faith formation at St. Mark's Episcopal Cathedral, has been a priest for more than 20 years. Now she's ready to tell people that, for the last 15 months, she's also been a Muslim - drawn to the faith after an introduction to Islamic prayers left her profoundly moved.

She says she felt an inexplicable call to become Muslim, and to surrender to God - the meaning of the word "Islam."

Rev. Ann Holmes Redding islam prayer praying christianity"It wasn't about intellect," she said. "All I know is the calling of my heart to Islam was very much something about my identity and who I am supposed to be. "I could not not be a Muslim."

How it happened | In fall 2005, a local Muslim leader gave a talk at the cathedral, then prayed before those attending. Redding was moved. As he dropped to his knees and stretched forward against the floor, it seemed to her that his whole body was involved in surrendering to God.

Then in the spring, at a St. Mark's interfaith class, another Muslim leader taught a chanted prayer and led a meditation on opening one's heart. The chanting appealed to the singer in Redding; the meditation spoke to her heart. She began saying the prayer daily.

She still doesn't know why that meant she had to become a Muslim. All she knows is "when God gives you an invitation, you don't turn it down."

In March 2006, she said her shahada - the profession of faith - testifying that there is only one God and that Mohammed is his messenger. She became a Muslim.

Before she took the shahada, she read a lot about Islam. Afterward, she learned from local Muslim leaders, including those in Islam's largest denomination - Sunni - and those in the Sufi mystical tradition of Islam. There were moments when practicing Islam seemed like coming home. Friends who didn't know she was practicing Islam told her she glowed.

very interesting.

I sometimes miss church - I felt much more community and social benefits in church than in masjid. I felt like people were nicer, did more to help others and community, and had more to offer youth and different interests, etc. Of course it depends on the church/masjid.

Dear Otowi,
what you said is a reality. at one point the mosque was the central focus of social work, socializing, parliament, helpline for the needy and even resting place for the traveler - and now you see. sometime compared to many church, it seems mosques are lacking the spirit.

Andrea,

I always say let us look for the similarities rather than the differences between our faiths. Im pleased that the world is moving in that direction.

I love how she talks about her choice to be Christian and Muslim as an expression of who she is... if only all we respected each other for who we are... rather than insisting that one has to be faithful in a particular way... and I really love andrea's comment. Well said. I've added you to my blogroll.

and again.. another blog with this persons marketing scam on every blog having to do with religion and jesus christ and muslims... I wonder how much blog marketing spam costs these days. I think I will write a book on how jesus christ was fathered by Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) when he went through a worm hole in time and space! I bet I can make some money off it! Do not play into these people. They are not trying to spread knowledge, they are trying to use your interest to get your money. If you have money to waste, then use your money for better things like zakat.

It will be interesting to see how the Islamic world responds to this one. The majority of muslims hold the view point that it was judas iscariot on the cross, but this author claims an independant theory. After seeing the cover art I think I know where he is going with this one. Sounds like an interesting read. It is my opinion that this is a challenge to both christians and muslims.

THE AUTHOR OF THIS BOOK DELIVER A MESSIAH MISTAKEN IDENTITY MADE IT QUITE CLEAR THAT HE WASN'T OUT BASHING ANYONES RELIGION.. I HAVE READ THE BOOK , AND QUITE FRANKLY HE MAKES GOOD POINTS ON CERTAIN ASPECTS OF THE MESSIANIC STORY AS TOLD IN THE GOSPELS.. I WAS AMAZINGLY SURPRISED AS TO HOW HE USED HIS PROOFS NAMELY THE FOUR GOSPELS AND THE MOSLEM KORAN TO SUPPORT THIS THEORY OF JOHN BEING ON THE CROSS AND NOT THE CHRIST. IN ALL THE LITERATURE I HAVE READ PERTAINING TO THIS CRUCIFIXION THEORY BY ISLAMISTS, I HAVE NEVER ENCOUNTERED ONE LIKE IT. WHO WOULD HAVE EVER THOUGHT THAT JOHN THE BAPTIST BEAR SO MANY SIMILARATIES OF JESUS. YOU KNOW I TOO AM LOOKING INTO THE KORAN MORE NOW. IT IS INTERESTING THAT THIS AUTHOR DOES NOT REGARD THESE TWO PROPHETS AS FAILURES (ONE KILLED ON THE CROSS) AND THE OTHERS (HEAD BEING CHOPPED OFF). THIS AUTHOR ATTRIBUTES SUCCESS TO THEM.. TO TELL YOU THE TRUTH, I'D RATHER REMEMBER THEM OF SUCCESS THEN FAILURE. SO MR SIMEON OR WHOEVER YOU ARE, I THINK YOU SHOULD RE-EXAMINE YOUR GOSPELS (RECORDS) AND FIND OUT THE TRUTH BEFORE CASTING SUCH VILE ASSAULTS ON A MAN WHO IS IN SEARCH FOR TRUTH. MAY THE HIGH LORD HAVE MERCY ON YOUR SOUL.

Agron Belica of the book deliver a messiah did an outstanding job in interpreting the scriptures. I mean c'mon, I have heard the most absurd answer from religionist's when I asked question's about certain aspects of this story. In your face kind of stuff by this author and well put. Good flow, style, the proofs omg! Look, lets face it they will not let this fly. When I say they, I mean "clergy". Lets face it, clergy sets the rules and has the final say so. But not for me dear friends, I'm tired of the clergy beating around the bush. It's a shame I needed to get answer's outside of my faith. Nevertheless, I'd like to take my hat off to the author for such a spectacular job. All the best to you sir. Richard Benton. Ca. Usa

read the book, very pleased and amazingly surprised...the comparisons and points you make are undeniably plausible, i can see why youre getting so much backlash and stirring up controversy...very clever the way you put this together, and cited religious text to support your arguments...ultimately, i was very surprised by the way you came to a close, it raises other arguments that definitely had me baffled...can't wait to read the full text, i'm sure i'll be blown away by it like i was by the prequel...thanks brother for the work, what's the sense in reading a piece if it doesn't challenge the senses, and this one definitely did just that...salaam...look forward to reading more of your work in the future!!!

DELIVER A MESSIAH MISTAKEN IDENTITY

Subtitle: LIBERATION DAY

By: Author Agron Belica

As an avid reader of the Holy Bible, how many countless times have you
drawn your own interpretations, and conclusions? How many versions
of the Bible have you read, comparing ancient manuscripts to modern
day Scripture? As an open minded reader in faith, and Christianity, has
your bias lead you directly to extensive research on the words, and
works of Christ? Is is possible that Jesus did not die on the cross?
Is the accepted view of the life of Christ incomplete? Are we thirsty
for the mysterious, thus craving for more information on what we
doubt, or believe is missing? Are we comfortable, and completely
satisfied in what we've learned in a lifetime about the son of Mary,
and the crucifixion? These are only a few questions that the curious
reader is left to ponder, after reading the cleverly written book,
"DELIVER A MESSIAH MISTAKEN IDENTITY." As an educated scholar
on Christian history, Agron Belica fills the pages with contradictions
and controversy on the life of Mary,Jesus, and the crucifixion. The
author presents persuasive arguments on theory which surrounds
the events, and circumstances which took place during that era,
obtained from years of elaborate examination. The reader is left with
yet another crucial question, has prevailing powers camouflaged
the truth? The author's comparisons are undeniable plausible, while
he sites religious documents to support his arguments, leaving the
reader amazingly surprised. I would recommend this book to all reader's
who wish to explore facts, and seek additional knowledge obtained
through research about faith, and Christianity. In comparison to the
book "Holy Blood, Holy Grail" Agron Belica enlightens his open minded
readers to other possibilities as they absorb each bit of information
with a grain of salt. The author does not shoot the facts into the reader's
face. Instead, he gently challenges the senses while using theory as the
key to open the door to other possibilities as we draw our own opinions,
and conclusions. "DELIVER A MESSIAH MISTAKEN IDENTITY" is
precise, and interesting. Regardless of which road the reader takes
on the teachings of the life of Christ, Agron Belica provides us with the
ultimate message that remains the same, eternal Blessings in the light
of Christ. Combined with that message and the author's presentation
of research, if just one reader is left with any doubts, then the author's
mission has been accomplished. This novel is an impressive, passionate
read, and is as Powerfully Moving as "THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST"
with Mel Gibson!
