stop the discrimination against the Egyptian Christians, the Copts | a reminder from Prophet Muhammad's charter of privileges to Christians
Few days back i received an email from the Arab Writers Group Syndicate calling attention to the discrimination and violation of human rights by the Egyptian officials against the native Egyptian Christian community, also known as the Copts. Its totally unacceptable and also against the ethics of Islam. It must be noted that this problem is from corrupted political system, degradation of moral ethics and human value which we find so often in our troubled time.. Egyptian Christians: Strangers in their Native Land!
The Copts, Egypt’s indigenous, pre-Arab, pre-Islamic Christians, are a native ethno-religious group of Egypt. Egyptian Christians trace their ancestry to the indigenous Pharaonic-era population of Egypt, converted to Christianity by St. Mark, one of Christ’s earliest disciples. Today Copts number approximately seven to twelve million people and constitute between 10% and 15% of the Egyptian population, making them the largest indigenous Christian community in both Africa and the Middle East.
The issue of the Christians of Egypt has gained international media coverage in the last decades. Reports of persecution and discrimination against them in their native country of Egypt have made headlines around the world. [>] Credit and read the whole article here. (more examples and here).Any conscious human being and specially any Muslim will condemn such behavior against other religious minority. Minority religious groups in Muslim majority society is considered sacred responsibility (God's covenant) to protect their rights as that is the teaching of Prophet Muhammad. It's time to remind about the letter of the Prophet which was written specifically for the protection to the monks of St. Catherine and which stands as a hallmark of Islam's attitude of allowing religious freedom which unfortunately we have seen been abused and violated against the very teaching of Islam.
. Brief History of St Catherine's Monastery
St. Catherine Monastery is the iconic site representing Egypt's rich Christian heritage. It is one of the oldest Christian monasteries in the world, St. Catherine's incorporates the burning bush seen by Moses and contains many valuable icons, ancient religious texts. Above the monastery is Mount Sinai (or Jebel Musa, Mount Moses), where Moses received the Ten Commandments from God. This area is thus sacred to three world religions: Christianity, Islam and Judaism.
The monastery is Greek Orthodox and currently a UNESCO World Heritage Site, was founded in the 6th century by the Byzantine Emperor Justinian (527-565AD). The Monastery is connected with the history of Islam's broad minded approach and relation with Christian world.
According to tradition, during the time of the Prophet Muhammad and due to growing influence of Islam in the region led the monks to send a delegation to Medina in 625 / 628 AD in order to secure protection. The Prophet agreed and signed a document of protection, a copy of which still resides in the monastery and bears the outline of his handprint. It was this document that allowed the monastery's monks to travel freely throughout Muslim lands from the time of the Muslim conquests onwards, without fear of harassment.
. The Letter of Prophet MuhammadBelow is the English translation of the extra-ordinary letter by Prophet Muhammad as a Charter of Privileges to Christians monks of St. Catherine Monastery at Mt. Sinai. It consisted of several clauses covering all aspects of human rights including such topics as the protection of Christians, freedom of worship and movement, freedom to appoint their own judges and to own and maintain their property, exemption from military service, and the right to protection in war. It bears the hallmark of Islam and Prophet's attitude about the right of other religious practitioners.
* This is a message from Muhammad ibn Abdullah, as a covenant to those who adopt Christianity, near and far, we are with them.
* Verily I, the servants, the helpers, and my followers defend them, because Christians are my citizens; and by Allah! I hold out against anything that displeases them.
* No compulsion is to be on them.
* Neither are their judges to be removed from their jobs nor their monks from their monasteries.
* No one is to destroy a house of their religion, to damage it, or to carry anything from it to the Muslims' houses.
* Should anyone take any of these, he would spoil God's covenant and disobey His Prophet. Verily, they are my allies and have my secure charter against all that they hate.
* No one is to force them to travel or to oblige them to fight.
* The Muslims are to fight for them.
* If a female Christian is married to a Muslim, it is not to take place without her approval. She is not to be prevented from visiting her church to pray.
* Their churches are to be respected. They are neither to be prevented from repairing them nor the sacredness of their covenants.
* No one of the nation (Ummah, the Muslims) is to disobey the covenant till the Last Day (end of the world).
May we all join in the call to stop discrimination and violation of human rights against the Christian brother and sisters in Egypt and those actions should be condemned and stopped immediately.

thank you for shining light on this issue. I wish you could be the ambassador of all muslims. May continue to bless you.
thank you for the beautiful post
it is indeed time for muslims at first place to understand that this religion is the religion of peace and tranquility not that of wars and tortures. it is also time for the humanity to understand that it is time for uniting forces towards a common development because HUMANITY has more similarities than differences. it is time for state makers to understand that development can not come through unfair exploitation of poor people of other nations...
thank u for the wonderful job u do here. lets hope more people will get to understand this...
God bless you all
Dear Sadiq,
Salaam and warm greetings! An extremly enlightening post.
Religion never preached discrimination, disrespect and superiority of one's own faith over others.
Time and again humanity needs to be reminded and preached the teachings and messages of all our Prophets(PBUT)and i am so proud to say that its you who have been doing this through your wonderful blog!
I completely agree with Frieda when she says you should be the ambassador of Islam.
May God bless you in all your endeavours and may you shine up our lives by your immense depth of knowledge and love for all religions.
May you always be blessed with unceasing peace:-)
Beautiful post, Sadiq. Thank you for sharing this. God bless you.
thanks so much my beloved visitors.
i can't help myself but again and again i was reading every sentence of the letter written by Prophet ever since i read it for the first time and then posted here, and was wondering about his wisdom and generosity. if he was alive during that time, i am sure crusades would never have taken place. there would be no need for it.
and thanks for your heart warming, generous blessings to this poor fellow. God's blessing and love be with you all.
Not to say that things don't happen to the Copts, but you should consider that there is much political convenience for them to claim "persecution" by Muslims.
A lawyer friend of mine worked in the immigration court and was struck by the overexaggeration and wild tales the Copts would dream up to get asylum in the US based on religious persecution. My friend once asked one of them, "were you persecuted before or after you got your free degree from Cairo University"?
Thank you, Sadiq. This is important, not just for Musllims, but for people of all faiths.
Peace.
To the "intellectual Insurgent": You gave one example (Category)of abuse, but what do you say about preventing existing churches in Egypt from construction/maintenance? what do you say about hiring muslims university research assistants "demonstrators" with lower grades than their copt counterpart? how about ignoring applicants for jobs? Why a person's religion need to be on the passport? Why applications(multiplurals) for birth certificates return certificates with "Muslim religion" regardless? I can go on and on ???
I'd have to add my voice to intellectual insurgent here ... being a muslim living in Egypt I find that infact there is more discrimination against Islamists in Egypt because the government is truly secular. Any Islamic scholar or preacher who rises to fame or popularity is invariable prevented from preaching or at least harassed into leaving the country ... ( Wagdy Ghoneim, Omar Abdel Kafy, Amro Khaled).
And university positions are corruptly assigned to relatives of already existing member of staff regardless of their religion. My own parents warned me against growing my beard or praying too often in the mosque for fear of getting into trouble/ getting rounded up by the state security. Student bodies who claim to be Islamic are consistently disqualified from running in university student elections.
Infact hilariously enough , I had a professor at college who said that his employment was delayed for six months because he was from Asyut ( a city in south Egypt where Islamic movements are quite prominent ) ...get this, and I quote ,,,, "even though he is a Christian"
So basically the government just doesn't want any trouble, being it Islamic/Christian... and trust me ( especially Islamic.
And its true about the discrimination claims by Christians to gain entrance to the USA( I honestly don't blame them because on the personal level the economic situation is just bad in Egypt) I have a friend who says this is the last resort for him because if he uses that excuse he won't be able to go back to Egypt.
I am a supporter of the antidiscrimination of Copts in Egypt. Not just for the mere fact that they are indigenous and the word Copt in Arabic means Orthodox, original 'OG' if you know what I am saying.
But it really saddens me how these people that we support for the sake of exhibiting and abiding by true and authentic Islamic behavior have taken it a step too far. If a Muslim even passes Gas near a Copt, they scream sectarian violence. I mean really guys, in a land as beautiful and corrupt as Egypt, where it is tantamount to blame somebody or something for your ills, what do you expect? It doesn't surprise me in the least.
I just wish the persecuted Muslims had a similar outlet instead of C4 and nitrate concoctions if you know what i mean?
