assembly of remembrance | zikr

- saying of Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him
Above is a hadith or islamic tradition, along with inspiring Quranic verses on remembrance of God, are the basis of the assembly of remembrance or zikr (also written as dhikr) practice as preserved by the sufis, gnostics and also by muslims who don't necessarily call themselves sufi.
Has not the time arrived for the believers that their hearts in all humility should engage in the remembrance of God and of the Truth which has been revealed .. - The Quran 57:16
And remember God in abundance that you may be successful.
- The Quran 62:10
... and certainly the repeated remembrance (Zikr) of God is the greatest. - The Quran 29:45
The sacred tradition of assembly of remembrance was also practiced by Jesus Christ, son of Mary, with his holy companions, peace and blessings be upon them. One such zikr in a circle assembly with praise of God led by Christ himself as the Shaykh is recorded in early Christian Gnostic text, the Apocryphal Acts of St. John. St. John records: Now before he was taken by the lawless, who also were governed by the lawless serpent (satan), he gathered all of us together and said: Before I am delivered up unto them let us sing an hymn to the Father, and so go forth to that which lieth before us. He bade us therefore make as it were a ring, holding one another's hands, and himself standing in the midst. (see Hymn of Jesus)
In Islamic wisdom tradition the practice of remembrance of God in assembly goes back during the time of Prophet Muhammad as recorded by his holy companions. The hadiths record:
In the lifetime of the Prophet it was the custom to celebrate Allah’s praises aloud after the congregational prayers. (Bukhari, v1, b12, n802, narrator Abu Ma'bad)
Ibn ‘Abbas reported: Dhikr (mentioning the name of Allah) in a loud voice after obligatory prayers was (a common practice) during the lifetime of the Apostle of Allah; and when I heard that I came to knew that they had finished the contact prayer. (Muslim, b4, n1211)
Shaykh Muzaffer Ashki al-Jerrahi (1916 - 1985), rev. Guide of Halveti-Jerrahi sufi order conducting a zikr in assembly of dervishes

Dear Sadiq-bhai,
Stunning photo! One of yours? I immediately thought of the lyrics to a Soul Call entitled “You Are The Center Of My Life” http://www.soulcalls.org/sc2_track5.htm
Whatever the language or path or scripture – it does all come down to That!
"You Are The Center Of My Life"
You are the center of my life.
You are my Refuge, You are my Light,
You are my Polestar each day and night.
You are the center of my life.
I will reason with Your wisdom,
I will act with Your joy.
You are the center of my life.
I will follow where You lead me
Hand in hand faithfully.
You are the center of my life.
I will rest in Your Presence.
I will touch Your holy feet.
You are the center of my life.
I will drink so deeply
From the fountain of Your bliss.
You are the center of my life.
You are my Refuge, You are my Light,
You are my Polestar each day and night.
You are the center of my life.
There is nothing left to do Lord,
But to love You constantly.
You are the center of my life.

Anchored in the Divine, the devotee's life revolves around and is focused on the Divine Beloved. Recognizing that "… in God do I live, move, and have my being," loving God is the only desire of the devotee's heart; the only lasting value, the one Divine Goal.
With you in that great Love,
Saranya

Events will include the Maghrib Salaah, the adhkaar, the 'Isha Salaah, the resumption of the Qadiriyya, the du'aa and a short lecture.
The recital will be led by Imam Fatgie Manie, Haji Toyer Adams, Imam Mogammad Ismail Davids, Hafith Razeen Carelse, Hafith Muneer Manie, Dr Shahiem Ganief, Haji Omar Abrahams, Haji Achmat Fish, Haji Ierfaan Sydow, Haji Liegaaj Ganief, Haji Mogamat Shafiek Salie, Haji Mogammad Faatiegh Manie, Haji Ismail Ganief, Haji Mogammad Yunus Kippie, Haji Mohammed Faaiz Adams, Haji Riedwaan Cassiem and Haji Taalieb Ganief.
The Sunni Muslim Masjid in Harvey Road, Claremont was built in 1908. Its first Imam was Imam Mogammad Amien Mustapha. He had officiated there for 54 years. Imam Mogammad Amien's daughters Gadija (d. 1943) and Asa (d. 1944), and wife Salega nee Ryklief (d. 1953) had passed away before him. Imam Mogammad Amien Mustapha had died on 22 March 1962 aged 74 and was buried at the Mowbray Cemetery. He was survived by his children Haji Mogammad Rashaad (d. 1986), Abdul Gamied (d. 1985), Mariam (d. 1987), Jogerah (1929-2008), Mareldia (d. 1992), Asma (b. 1938) and his adopted daughter Fatima (b. 1934). Imam Toyer Latief (d. 1947) had assisted Imam Mogammad Amien Mustapha and had taught there. Hafith Abduragmaan Ely (d. 1960) had led the taraweeh salaah. Before taking up the Imamate post at Masjid al-Waqaf in Kimberley, Imam Yusuf Gallant (b. 1927) had, for three months in 1964, deputised as the Sunni Muslim Masjid Imam. Hafith al-Qur’an Imam Gasan Abdurahman was the Imam of the mosque until his death in 1975. Boeta Abu Bakr Levy (d. 1967) had presided as his second-in-command. The last remains of Imam Gasan Abdurahman were interred at the Mowbray Cemetery. Boeta Ismail Cassiem, Boeta Imraan Stemmet, Boeta Amardien Stemmet, Boeta Omar Adams and Haji Ismail Noordien (1924-2004) had, over the years, called the worshippers to prayer. The shuyukh Abu Bakr and Ebrahim Gabriels had cut their teeth at the Sunni Muslim Masjid and had qualified in al-Madinah al-Munawwarah, Arabia. Arabic grammarian Sheikh Abdullah Abduroaf (d. 2004) had studied in Mecca and had served the Harvey Road faithful from 1975 till 1988. By this time, most people of colour had been forced from Claremont by apartheid and the Group Areas Act. Sheikh Abdullah Abduroaf was succeeded by the current incumbent, Imam Mogammad Ali Gierdien (b. 1930).

Insha-Allah, on Saturday, 17th January 2009, 'the College' in Duine Road, Doornhoogte, Cape Town will host dhikrullah by the 'Ibaad-u-Ragmaan Qadiri Jamaa'ah.
The Habibia complex was the first mosque and madrassah set of buildings on the Cape Flats. It is the largest (and busiest) Islamic centre in South Africa. The institution consists of a big mosque, four educational establishments, the Imam's house, a caretaker's home, a large hall, an orphanage, a bookshop and a car park. It also has a pretty garden. Between the nursery school and the mosque is the shrine that holds the holy grave of Maulana 'Abd Al Latif the son of Qadi Muhammad Yusuf, the son of Qadi 'Abd Al Rahman. The burial place of Shah Muhammad Yusuf Purkar al-Nizami al-Habibi (d. 1936), the brother-in-law of Maulana 'Abd Al-Latif and the father of the venerable Imam Abdullatief "Babu" Parker (d. 2004), is adjacent to the tomb. Habibia has few peers architecturally.
The Habibia Soofie Masjid was built on piety. Janab Hadhrat Goolam Mohammed Sufi Sahib al-Qadiri al-Chisti al-Nizami al-Hafithi al-Habibi al-Siddiqi (d. 1911) and "Sayedie" (d. 1916, as Maulana 'Abd al Latif is known) were the initial inspirations behind the construction of the centre (May Allah, The One Who Loves His believing slaves, Watch Over them and all the people of their house).
Events at Habibia, Insha-Allah, will include the Maghrib Salaah, the adhkaar, the 'Isha Salaah, the resumption of the Qadiriyya, the du'aa and a short lecture.
